Playdough is that wonderfully gooey dough that is great for children’s tactile development, hand/eye coordination and is just plain fun.

Playdough can be bought or homemade. The purchased Playdough usually lasts longer but the homemade Playdough is much cheaper, easily replaceable and you know exactly what is in it (in case any child decides to test taste the Playdough).

Helpful Hints for Baking dough:

Sprinkle dough and hands occasionally with flour to prevent sticking.

When joining dough together always moisten with water and press into place.

A fine pin or needle can be used to prick dough in a few places before putting in oven - this prevents air pockets from forming.

Remove any foil used in sculpting as soon as dough is hard enough to support itself - dough will cook more evenly without foil inside.

After baking let dough cool gradually in oven - this will reduce any chance of cracking. If some parts of dough are browning faster than others, cover dough with foil and continue to bake.

Helpful Hints for Air Drying Dough:

After completing sculpture, let dry for 48 hours or until dough is rock hard and white in appearance.

Finishing touches:

For a natural look brush on beaten egg with brush, bake until egg has turned a golden colour. 5-10 minutes, cool and use varnish on both sides of the work.

To protect dough from absorbing moisture be sure to paint sculpture on both sides. (varnish or an acrylic sealer can be used.
